The political tension between Nigeria’s top lawmakers has taken a dramatic twist, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over what he describes as a false and damaging accusation made against him by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
According to a letter dated April 3, 2025, Akpabio urged the police chief to launch an immediate investigation and prosecute Akpoti-Uduaghan for what he terms “criminal defamation.”
The Senate President is also demanding justice through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who was copied in the petition.
The controversy stems from comments made by Senator Natasha during her homecoming rally in Kogi State on April 1, 2025.
In her speech, she accused Akpabio of plotting with former Governor Yahaya Bello and current Governor Usman Ododo to assassinate her—allegedly to make it appear as though her own constituents were behind her death.
Akpabio, in his petition, flatly denied the accusations, calling them “heinous lies” and part of a politically driven smear campaign aimed at damaging his reputation and inciting unrest.
He emphasized that no evidence was provided to support such a serious claim and warned of the potential dangers these kinds of allegations could pose to democracy.
“This is a deliberate and calculated act to blackmail me and destroy my public image,” Akpabio wrote. “Senator Natasha’s statement was not only reckless, but it also endangered my life and undermines public trust.”
The Senate President described the viral nature of the allegation—spreading swiftly across radio, TV, and social media—as especially harmful.
He insisted that such baseless and provocative statements must not go unpunished, urging law enforcement to act swiftly.
Akpabio concluded by stressing that public officeholders should be held accountable for spreading misinformation, especially when it threatens peace and democracy.
