Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, marked his 60th birthday with an inspiring act of compassion by granting clemency to 40 convicts.
The announcement, made by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, emphasized the governor’s commitment to reformative justice.
Among the pardoned individuals, 15 prisoners will be released outright on January 12, 2025.
Others had their sentences commuted, including death penalties reduced to life imprisonment. This significant decision stems from recommendations by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by Ajulo.
Ajulo highlighted that the clemency reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to creating a justice system centered on rehabilitation over punishment.
He added that the governor’s actions align with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, demonstrating a profound commitment to justice sector reforms.
In addition, Governor Aiyedatiwa opted to forgo elaborate birthday celebrations as a mark of respect for the late Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi, who passed away recently.
This remarkable gesture reinforces the governor’s administration’s commitment to fostering hope, redemption, and societal reintegration for the beneficiaries.
