Renowned legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, has reiterated his stance that activist lawyer Dele Farotimi aims to tarnish his longstanding reputation. Babalola’s concerns stem from allegations made by Farotimi in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.
In response, Babalola petitioned the police to investigate these claims, leading to Farotimi’s arrest in Lagos and subsequent arraignment in Ado Ekiti. The court has remanded Farotimi in custody, with proceedings adjourned until December 10, 2024.
Addressing the media, Babalola’s legal representatives emphasized the importance of verifying facts before forming opinions. They stated, “All facts are verifiable. We urge Nigerians to verify and find out what the truth is first before picking a side.” They further clarified that Babalola’s petition requested the police to invite Farotimi to substantiate his claims or face prosecution for criminal defamation.
In a related development, the police have filed additional charges against Farotimi at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti. These charges pertain to alleged cybercrimes linked to statements made by Farotimi during an online interview on the “Mic On Podcast” hosted by Seun Okinbaloye. In the interview, Farotimi reportedly accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary. The police assert that such statements constitute false information intended to disrupt public order, violating Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.
The legal community and the public are closely monitoring this case, given its implications for free speech and the protection of individual reputations.
