Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has called for the urgent rebuilding of Nigeria’s military institutions to safeguard democracy, lives, and property.
Adebayo made the remarks during the public presentation of Nine Lives: The Bello-Fadile Memoirs, a book by retired Colonel Babatunde Bello-Fadile, held at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Monday.
Adebayo emphasized that the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria is linked to institutional weaknesses and a lack of discipline among those in charge of the nation’s governance.
He also stressed the need for reforms in other critical sectors, such as the civil service, justice system, and industrial sector.
He said, “We must focus on rebuilding four key institutions: the military, civil service, justice system, and industrial sector.
These are crucial to addressing the modern challenges we face.”
Adebayo also announced the purchase of 1,000 copies of the memoir to be distributed to military schools, formations, and universities across the country.
The SDP leader further noted that Nigeria’s historical achievements, including the development of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, could be traced to the military, with many of the nation’s best-trained minds having served as military personnel.
“The military has played a pivotal role in preserving the nation’s unity and identity,” Adebayo remarked.
“We cannot afford to neglect the military.”
The event was chaired by former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar, with other notable figures in attendance, including former Chief of Defence Staff General Martin Luther Agwai, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-National Security Adviser Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd.).
