Abuja Trader Arrested for Fatally Beating Colleague Over Market Space

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Onu Simeon following a deadly altercation at Utako Market, Abuja, that resulted in the death of Ifeanyi Chukwu.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred on February 5, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m.

“Police operatives responded to a distress call about a fight at Utako Market. On arrival, Ifeanyi Chukwu was found unconscious and was immediately taken to NNPC Hospital, Utako, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.”

What Led to the Fatal Dispute?

Preliminary investigations revealed that the altercation stemmed from a dispute over a space to display goods.

Onu Simeon, a trader from Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and Ifeanyi Chukwu from Kuchigoro, Lugbe, got into an argument, which escalated into a physical fight.

During the scuffle, Chukwu collapsed and lost consciousness. His body has been taken to a general hospital for autopsy and further investigation.

Meanwhile, Onu Simeon remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Police Urge Peaceful Dispute Resolution

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, condemned the incident, urging residents to embrace peaceful conflict resolution to avoid such tragic outcomes.

“We strongly discourage violence in resolving disputes. The Police Command remains committed to ensuring law and order in the FCT.”
