Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has announced plans to confer honorary degrees on two globally renowned figures: Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and Sheikh Sharif Al-Hussain, a distinguished Islamic scholar.
This decision was ratified at the university’s 544th (Special) Senate meeting on January 7, 2025, and subsequently approved by its Governing Council during the 207th meeting held the next day.
Recognition of Excellence at ABU’s 44th Convocation Ceremony
The honorary degrees will be conferred during ABU’s 44th Convocation Ceremony on January 25, 2025.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala will receive a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for her exceptional contributions to global finance and economic development, while Sheikh Sharif Al-Hussain will be awarded a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Honoris Causa for his profound impact on Islamic scholarship.
Okonjo-Iweala: A Trailblazer in Global Finance
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s illustrious career spans over four decades, during which she served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and became the first woman and first African to lead the WTO.
A graduate of Harvard University with a Ph.D. from MIT, she has worked across continents, shaping policies and driving economic reforms.
The university’s statement lauded her dedication to development, stating, “Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has tirelessly promoted economic growth and good governance, leaving a lasting legacy in both national and international arenas.”
Sheikh Al-Hussain: A Luminary in Islamic Scholarship
Sheikh Sharif Al-Hussain, born in 1938 in Borno State, has made significant contributions to Islamic education.
With over 500 publications and countless conference papers, his work spans Qur’anic Studies, philosophy, and jurisprudence.
The statement highlighted his unique approach to combining traditional Islamic scholarship with modern methodologies, earning him global respect.
