In a significant political endorsement ahead of the 2027 general elections, traditional rulers from the South-East have pledged to deliver overwhelming support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing his administration’s commitment to inclusive leadership and regional development.
Monarchs Pledge 70% Votes for Tinubu
Traditional rulers from across the South-East, under the umbrella of the Ndi Igbo Progressive Traditional Rulers Council, have vowed to secure at least 70 percent of the region’s votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Led by His Royal Majesty Eze Nnamdi Oforegbu of Abia State, the delegation made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, in Umuahia, Abia State.
Gratitude for the South-East Development Commission (SEDC)
Speaking on behalf of the council, Eze Oforegbu conveyed their appreciation to President Tinubu for establishing the South-East Development Commission, a move they believe will catalyze infrastructure and economic growth in the region.
The monarchs also lauded Deputy Speaker Kalu for his legislative efforts, particularly for sponsoring the bill that created the SEDC, and offered royal blessings for his political journey.
“We are here to express our profound gratitude. Your actions have exceeded our expectations,” Oforegbu said. “We thank President Tinubu for promoting our brothers to lead critical initiatives like the SEDC. As you lift others, may you also rise even higher.”
Tinubu’s Inclusive Leadership Praised
Responding to the monarchs, Benjamin Kalu expressed gratitude for their endorsement and emphasized President Tinubu’s loyalty to those who support him.
“The President is a shining example of loyalty. If you offer him a small favor, even a decade later, he will remember and reward you,” Kalu said.
“Under the previous administration, the South-East had limited representation. Today, we have key positions: the Deputy Speakership, Chief of Naval Staff, and Minister of Works.”
He urged traditional rulers to mobilize their communities, stating that voting should be seen as an investment for a better future.
Push for Constitutional Recognition of Traditional Rulers
Kalu also assured the monarchs that efforts are underway in the National Assembly to formally recognize traditional rulers in the constitution, highlighting their critical role in maintaining unity, peace, and security across rural communities.
“Traditional rulers contribute significantly to community stability. The President values traditional institutions highly, and constitutional reforms will soon reflect your important role,” Kalu added.
