In a bold operation aimed at tackling rising insecurity, the Delta State Police Command has neutralized five suspected kidnappers during a fierce gunfight.
Police Crack Down on Kidnap Gangs in Delta and Anambra Forests
In a major breakthrough against criminal activities, operatives of the Delta State Police Command have gunned down five suspected kidnappers following a raid on their hideouts.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the operation in a statement issued on Sunday. According to him, the suspects engaged the police in a violent confrontation after a raid in a forest located between Issele-Asagba and Utulu communities.
Weapons and Ammunition Recovered from Criminals
Before the deadly encounter, police operatives had earlier stormed another hideout belonging to the gang in Agu-Amawbia forest, Anambra State. During that raid, officers recovered one AK-47 rifle and 132 rounds of live ammunition, severely disrupting the gang’s operations.
Mr. Edafe explained that intelligence reports had identified the gang, led by one Bellow Abubakar, as responsible for several kidnapping incidents in Ubuluku, Isseluku, Issele-Asagba, and surrounding areas.
Fierce Gun Battle Ends with Five Suspects Dead
Following the Anambra raid, the police extended their investigation to another hideout, where the suspects were already lying in ambush. Upon sighting the operatives, the kidnappers opened fire, triggering a fierce gun duel.
Despite the heavy attack, the police team, anticipating resistance, responded decisively. Outgunned and injured, the criminals attempted to flee in various directions.
However, five of them, including the notorious gang leader Bellow Abubakar, sustained critical injuries and were apprehended. They were rushed to a nearby hospital but were later confirmed dead.
More Weapons Seized, Manhunt Ongoing
Further searches in the forest led to the recovery of two additional AK-47 rifles and 18 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
The Delta State Police Command has vowed to continue its manhunt for other gang members who fled with gunshot wounds, assuring residents of the state’s commitment to security.
“We will not rest until all criminal elements disturbing the peace of Delta State are brought to justice,” Mr. Edafe reaffirmed.
