In a concerning revelation, recent reports highlight how foreign terrorists are exploiting ungoverned routes in northern Nigeria to launch devastating attacks on vulnerable communities.

A disturbing trend has emerged, where cross-border criminals are establishing routes to smuggle arms, drugs, and other illegal goods, further escalating the violence within the region.
According to sources close to NIGPOST, terrorists have effectively set up networks for both trafficking arms and spreading terror, targeting innocent civilians.
These terrorists often disguise themselves as farmers, herders, or traders, infiltrating Nigeria in large groups to avoid detection. Areas like Borno, Adamawa, Katsina, and Sokoto have become major entry points for these terrorists, who use vast, unmonitored stretches of land to enter the country undetected.
A retired military officer, Akogun-Abudu Olumayowa, explained that the criminal groups often manipulate local communities through religion and political ties, making it difficult to combat their activities.
“These regions are vast, largely unmonitored, and have no immigration control in place, which allows these terrorists to thrive,” Olumayowa stated.
On the ground, terror routes have been identified, and in regions like Borno, these routes have been linked to infamous terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP.
These militants are known to use villages like Wulgo near Lake Chad to transport arms and fighters into the heart of Nigeria. Military forces have struggled to monitor these expansive areas, with landmines and explosives planted by insurgents becoming deadly obstacles for Nigerian soldiers.
Similarly, in Katsina, criminal groups are using forests that link villages across the Zamfara border to carry out coordinated attacks.
The government closed several key roads in the area after multiple attacks on civilians. The persistent use of these forested regions has resulted in increasing fatalities and displaced communities.
The security situation in Sokoto has worsened, as criminals now openly cross the Nigerian-Niger border to launch daylight raids on residents.
A security expert in the region, Gazali Arzika, expressed the growing concerns of local residents who are increasingly living in fear due to the brazen nature of the attacks.
The broader security situation in northern Nigeria is tied to instability in the Sahel region, where terrorist groups from countries like Mali and Chad have found refuge and are extending their operations into Nigeria.
