In a major breakthrough toward ending the Ukraine conflict, French President Emmanuel Macron has confirmed that Ukraine is willing to agree to an unconditional ceasefire, placing the next move squarely in the hands of Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
French President Emmanuel Macron revealed on Saturday that Ukraine is now ready to accept an unconditional ceasefire, signaling a strong desire to bring the long-running conflict to an end. Macron made the announcement after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome.
Describing their discussions on his X account as “very positive,” Macron emphasized that both he and Zelenskyy share a common goal: achieving peace in Ukraine.
“Ending the war in Ukraine is the goal we share with President Trump,” Macron stated, highlighting the united front between European and American partners.
According to Macron, Ukraine has expressed full readiness to stop hostilities without any preconditions and is open to working closely with both European allies and the United States to realize lasting peace.
“President Zelenskyy reiterated this commitment to me today,” Macron added.
The next step, Macron stressed, depends on Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Now, it’s up to President Putin to prove that he truly wants peace,” he said.
Macron also restated France’s ongoing support for Ukraine through the Coalition of the Willing — a diplomatic alliance launched in Paris earlier this year aimed at coordinating international efforts for a ceasefire and a durable resolution to the conflict.
“We will continue our efforts within the Coalition of the Willing to achieve both an immediate ceasefire and a complete, lasting peace in Ukraine,” Macron affirmed.
Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy was in Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican. During the visit, he also met with U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Zelenskyy described his meeting with Trump as “very symbolic,” indicating strengthened diplomatic ties in these crucial moments.
The possibility of peace now hinges on Russia’s response, and the international community watches closely to see if Putin will embrace the opportunity for an end to hostilities.
