The political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 elections is heating up as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar launches a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu’s administration, while former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso weighs his next political move.
Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failing to meet the expectations of Nigerians and lacking tangible achievements that could justify a second term in 2027.
Reacting to recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku emphasized that he harbors no resentment toward those exercising their democratic rights. “Freedom of association is a core pillar of democracy,” he stated.
Among the high-profile defections are Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and House of Representatives member Oluwole Oke, all of whom recently left the PDP for the APC.
In a statement released Friday, Atiku clarified that democratic politics naturally involves defections and alliances. He, however, criticized the selective outrage over his visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting that consultations across party lines have always been a feature of Nigerian politics.
He pointed out the hypocrisy of critics who praised PDP leaders’ engagements with President Tinubu but condemned his meeting with Buhari. “When others engage Tinubu, it’s ‘strategic’; when I engage others, it’s a ‘national emergency’,” he remarked.
Atiku further accused the Tinubu administration of lacking direction, stating that it thrives on “chaos and division” rather than genuine governance. “The real enemy is not fellow citizens; it is the abysmal failure of the Tinubu administration,” Atiku said, urging Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious manipulation.
He warned that an incompetent government not only destroys itself but puts the entire nation at risk.
Kwankwaso’s Next Move
Meanwhile, political speculations are swirling around Rabiu Kwankwaso and his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Reliable sources suggest that the NNPP is considering forming alliances ahead of 2027, either by partnering with Atiku’s emerging coalition or by aligning with the APC.
Speaking exclusively to reporters, NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson confirmed that discussions were ongoing but said no final decision had been made.
Johnson explained that the NNPP traditionally begins major political activities at the midterm mark, which falls on May 29. He listed three possible paths for the party: continuing independently, forming a coalition with opposition figures like Atiku, or aligning with the ruling APC.
However, he cautioned that while rumors have circulated about Kwankwaso moving to the APC, no formal decision has been announced yet. “Very soon, we will make our position clear to our supporters,” he assured.
As Nigeria heads toward another crucial election cycle, the coming months promise intense political realignments and fierce debates over the country’s future leadership.
