In a move that has reshaped the political landscape of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other top members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a seismic realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
ASABA — In a shocking but strategic shift, Delta State’s political hierarchy witnessed a massive shake-up on Wednesday as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and numerous key stakeholders of the PDP dumped the party for the APC.
The dramatic announcement followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Asaba, where the decision was made public.
Speaking to the press, Charles Aniagwu, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, shed light on the reasons behind the defection. According to him, the move was driven by the need to align with a political platform that better reflects the development aspirations of Delta State.
“There’s been growing speculation about our political direction,” Aniagwu noted. “After wide-ranging consultations and careful deliberation, we have collectively agreed that the political climate has changed. To move forward, we must change course accordingly.”
Aniagwu emphasized that remaining in the PDP would jeopardize Delta’s ongoing development efforts and undermine progress. He compared the situation to adjusting to a change in the taste of palm wine — signaling that sticking with old strategies would no longer suffice in the current political environment.
Former Senator James Manager, a founding member of the PDP in Delta and a respected political voice, admitted the decision was emotionally difficult but necessary.
“I’ve been loyal to the PDP from day one. But when a ship is sinking, you don’t stay out of loyalty. You act to survive,” Manager explained. “This was not a hasty move. It followed deep consultations and collective reasoning.”
Among those present at the decisive meeting were Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Speaker of the House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, lawmakers from both the state and national assemblies, commissioners, local government chairmen, and other key PDP officials.
This high-profile defection marks the first time since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 that both a sitting and former governor in Delta State have abandoned the PDP. Analysts believe it could reshape the state’s political future and significantly impact the 2027 elections.
As Delta shifts its allegiance, many view this development as the beginning of a new political chapter, with the APC poised to consolidate its hold in a region long dominated by the PDP.
