In a heart-wrenching yet heroic rescue mission, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully intercepted a group of suspected child traffickers and rescued a newborn baby just two days old. The baby was allegedly being sold for ₦800,000.
According to DSP Timfon John, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, the arrest was made during a routine patrol along the Nsit Atai-Oron Road. Officers stopped a Mazda vehicle with registration number YAB 454 AA, which had three occupants—a man and two women—alongside the infant.
The individuals, when questioned, failed to provide convincing explanations for their possession of the newborn. Further investigations revealed a disturbing network of traffickers, with the suspects confessing they had come from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on the orders of two women—Waazor Godwin and Lilian Duru—to collect the baby from a woman named Grace Inyang in Oron.
Adding to the shock, the police discovered that the baby’s own mother and grandmother were involved in the sale. Grace Walter, 55, and Blessing Walter, 20, both from Oti Oron, confessed to handing over the baby for the agreed sum of ₦800,000.
Another individual, Alison Eduno, was also identified as the one who facilitated the deal between the buyer and seller.
Thankfully, the rescued baby is now in the custody of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, where proper care is being given while investigations continue. All suspects are in police custody and will face court proceedings upon conclusion of the investigation.
