A major fire disaster was narrowly avoided yesterday at the Bola Ige International Business Complex (BIIBCO) in Gbagi, Ibadan, thanks to the swift action of Oyo State officials and emergency responders.
According to reports, smoke was seen coming from Shop 332, sparking immediate concern. Security personnel quickly traced the issue to a spark caused by a poorly installed solar energy system. Without hesitation, they alerted the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, which immediately called in the State Fire Service.
The fire service responded in record time, dispatching two fire trucks to the scene. Their timely and efficient intervention prevented the fire from spreading to nearby shops, significantly minimizing potential damage and losses.
Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, Adeniyi Adebisi, who was represented by Permanent Secretary Mr. Mamud Okesade during a site visit, confirmed the root cause of the incident. He commended the fire service team for their rapid response and dedication.
Adebisi also extended appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to emergency management, noting that the administration’s investments in fire safety infrastructure, routine inspections, and staff training have made a real difference in emergency readiness.
To address the incident thoroughly, the Commissioner announced that the ministry will convene a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at assessing what went wrong and creating more robust preventive measures.
He also advised business owners in the complex and beyond to comply with safety regulations and embrace fire prevention practices to protect lives and livelihoods.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, Alhaji Mukaila Adebayo, the Babaloja of the complex, praised the fire service for their bravery and professionalism, highlighting their vital role in keeping the business environment safe.
