Tragedy struck in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos as the death toll from a collapsed three-storey building rose to five, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The building, located at 9 & 10 Oremeta Street, came crashing down on Saturday, trapping restaurant workers and customers under the rubble. Initially, only one fatality was reported, with nine others injured.
However, a fresh update from the Lagos Territorial Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) revealed that five lives have now been lost—two men and three women. Thankfully, 15 people were pulled out alive, including six women and nine men.
Speaking on the incident, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye of NEMA confirmed the figures, noting that emergency teams have continued their efforts to comb through the debris in search of more possible survivors.
In the meantime, LASEMA has cordoned off the area and implemented safety precautions to facilitate ongoing search and rescue operations.
This heartbreaking incident adds to the growing concerns over building safety regulations in Lagos State and highlights the need for stricter enforcement and regular structural assessments.
