During his powerful Easter sermon at the Cathedral Church of Advent in Abuja, the Anglican Primate of Nigeria, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, shared a message of hope and restoration for the nation. Drawing from the resurrection of Jesus Christ, he proclaimed that Nigeria, despite its current challenges, will rise again.
Speaking to journalists, Ndukuba said, “Just as Jesus rose from the dead, Nigeria will also rise. What the enemy has taken, God will restore.” He cited the book of Ezekiel 37, where dry bones were revived and transformed into a mighty army, emphasizing that the nation’s struggles and seeming hopelessness will be overcome.
“Nigeria is rising again,” he declared. “No matter how bad things seem—violence, poverty, insecurity—these carcasses of despair will rise again with power.”
Reflecting on John 20:19-21, Ndukuba reminded the nation that Jesus, after rising from the dead, offered peace to his fearful disciples. “In the same way,” he said, “I pray our leaders will pursue peace genuinely, not just in words but in action.”
He also questioned the true impact of Nigeria’s religious devotion, especially as both Christian and Muslim leaders proudly sponsor pilgrimages to holy sites. “But how has this transformed us?” he asked. “When those sponsoring pilgrimages are also behind the killing of innocent citizens, they must be exposed.”
The primate warned against the dangers of using religion and tribalism as weapons of division, calling them major threats to Nigeria’s unity. He condemned corruption, which he defined as using opportunities for selfish gain instead of the collective good.
He urged Nigerian leaders to emulate Christ’s sacrificial leadership, putting the people’s welfare above personal interest. “Jesus had all power but chose to sacrifice for humanity. Our leaders must also lead with sacrifice,” he added.
To fellow citizens, Ndukuba offered words of strength and encouragement. “Don’t give up. If death couldn’t hold Jesus, our challenges also have a solution—and that solution is in God through Jesus Christ.”
