In a shocking development, a 25-year-old soldier, Private Yahaya Yunusa, has been arrested by the Nigerian military for allegedly attempting to smuggle a large cache of ammunition in Jaji, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to a report obtained by SaharaReporters, Yunusa, who is attached to the 197 Special Forces Battalion in Zamfara State, was intercepted around 11:55 a.m.
On Friday, April 18, 2025. He was found in possession of 214 rounds of live ammunition, all of various calibres and some linked by chains—raising serious concerns about his motives.
Authorities disclosed that the breakdown of the ammunition included 50 rounds of 12.7×108mm, 69 rounds of 7.62×54mmR (linked), 35 rounds of unlinked 7.62×54mmR, and 60 rounds of 5.56×45mm.
Alongside the ammunition, Yunusa had his military ID card and several ATM cards, including those from Opay, Unity Bank, Access Bank, and First Bank.
During initial interrogation, Private Yunusa reportedly confessed that he retrieved the ammunition during operations.
He also revealed that he operated the Anti-Aircraft (AA) machine gun mounted on a military vehicle, adding another layer to the investigation.
The military has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but sources say disciplinary and legal proceedings will follow swiftly.
This incident adds to growing concerns about internal threats within the armed forces, especially amid ongoing security challenges in the country.
