A heartbreaking incident occurred in Osun State on Friday evening, as a 100-level student of the University of Ilesa, Gbolahan Ojo, lost his life after being electrocuted while using his phone during a thunderstorm.
According to eyewitnesses, Gbolahan was inside his hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction in Ilesa, playing a game on his phone, which was plugged into electricity.
Tragically, lightning struck during the heavy rainfall, causing a power surge that led to his electrocution. He was quickly rushed to the hospital but was sadly declared dead upon arrival.
Confirming the tragic news, the university described the loss as both unfortunate and deeply saddening. A statement issued by the school’s registrar, Mr. Funso Ojo, revealed that Gbolahan was a student in the Department of Business Administration.
His body has been taken to the morgue at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, after police cleared the scene.
The university authorities acted swiftly to notify law enforcement and the deceased’s family. Gbolahan’s father, upon receiving the devastating news, immediately traveled to Ilesa.
In a show of solidarity, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, alongside other key officials including the Dean of Student Affairs and the Area Police Commander, were present to console the grieving father.
The university has promised to stand by the bereaved family and offer all necessary support during this time of sorrow.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident, the entire University of Ilesa community is left mourning the sudden and painful loss of one of their own. Thoughts and prayers continue to pour in for Gbolahan’s family, friends, and classmates.
