The Oyo State government has renewed its commitment to resolving long-standing boundary disputes affecting 12 local government areas (LGAs) across the state.
At a peace meeting organized by the Ministry of Justice at the Mediation Centre in Ibadan, Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal, who also chairs the state’s Boundary Commission, urged leaders from the affected LGAs to prioritize peace and refrain from inciting unrest over land issues.
Lawal emphasized that the boundary conflicts must be addressed peacefully, noting that a responsible government will always seek to prevent violence and protect lives. He highlighted that the Boundary Committee is a constitutional body working towards fair, legal resolutions.
Some of the cases under review include disputes between Ibadan South West and Oluyole, Akinyele and Afijio, as well as Saki West and Atisbo LGs. The deputy governor stated that the judgments from both the High Court and Appeal Court were adopted in the Kajola-Iwajowa case, while the verdict for the Oyo East and Afijio dispute is still pending.
Meanwhile, the Surulere LGA chairman was directed to provide further updates on the conflict between Agbaa and Oko communities. The Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa East LGAs were also urged to maintain calm while awaiting boundary clarification.
The Surveyor-General was tasked with properly defining administrative boundaries beyond just community demarcations, to avoid future conflicts.
Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, reinforced the administration’s priority on peace, while the state’s Attorney General, Barr. Biodun Aikomo, assured all parties that detailed investigations would be conducted to ensure fair outcomes.
The 12 LGAs involved in the ongoing resolution process include:
Ibadan South-West and Oluyole
Oyo East and Afijio
Kajola and Iwajowa
Akinyele and Afijio
Saki West and Atisbo
Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa East
Surulere (Agbaa and Oko communities)
