Football legend Lionel Messi has opened up about his failed dream of returning to Barcelona after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In an emotional revelation, the Argentine superstar shared how he had every intention to return to the club where he spent most of his professional career — but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Currently playing for Inter Miami in the United States, Messi told Simplemente Fútbol that although he deeply longed to wear the Barcelona jersey again, circumstances made it impossible.
“I really wanted to go back to Barcelona — it was my plan, my desire, and my home. But once again, it didn’t happen,” Messi said.
Following his World Cup victory in Qatar while playing for Paris Saint-Germain, the 36-year-old said the decision about his next move became more of a family matter.
“Winning the World Cup gave me peace,” he added. “From then on, I knew I didn’t want to play for another European club. None of them. I wanted a new chapter.”
Messi’s legacy at Barcelona is unmatched: 17 seasons, 35 trophies, including ten La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League wins. His switch to Inter Miami might have surprised fans, but he has already made his mark there too, winning the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield.
