The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has expressed deep concern over the growing number of petrol tanker accidents occurring across the state, which have tragically led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions.
Speaking on Thursday in Ibadan, the General Manager of the agency, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, lamented the frequency of these incidents. He cited the tragic accident on the Ife-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday, where two tankers collided and burst into flames, claiming two lives.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Oyo State recorded no fewer than 10 petrol tanker-related accidents in just the first three months of 2025. Akinyinka emphasized that these accidents have become far too common and often end in fatal consequences.
He appealed directly to the petrol tanker drivers’ association, urging them to educate their members on the importance of cautious driving. “Most of these accidents happen because drivers ignore signs of fatigue or fail to maintain their vehicles before embarking on long journeys,” Akinyinka said.
He stressed that no one should be behind the wheel of a heavy-duty vehicle when tired, adding that rest is crucial before continuing any journey. “It’s painful to think that those who died yesterday might have been preparing for Easter or Eid-el-Kabir. Now their dreams have been cut short,” he lamented.
He concluded by urging drivers to take vehicle repairs seriously and prioritize safety at all times.
