Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has urged the Federal Government to swiftly relieve the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, of his duties.
Falana’s call comes amidst allegations that the administrator violated constitutional protocols and openly disregarded President Bola Tinubu’s authority.
In a statement made available on Thursday, Falana cited the official Federal Government Gazette which clearly outlines that the Sole Administrator is only to operate under specific regulations issued by President Tinubu himself.
“The Sole Administrator shall operate on the basis of such Regulations that may, from time to time, be issued by me,” the gazette quoted President Tinubu as saying.
Despite this, Falana pointed out that no such regulation has been issued by the President, yet the Sole Administrator has gone ahead to make appointments and dismiss individuals previously appointed by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
He described the move as unlawful and a flagrant disregard for the President’s directives. “By treating the orders of President Bola Tinubu with contempt, the Sole Administrator has worsened the illegality surrounding his appointment. He must be removed without further delay,” Falana emphasized.
This latest development adds fuel to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, where controversies over appointments and the distribution of power between the state and federal government have been heating up.
