As the race towards the 2027 general elections heats up, the internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is beginning to shake up former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his loyalists.
Unbothered by the position of PDP governors, Atiku has declared readiness to embrace any political platform capable of delivering good governance and unseating President Bola Tinubu.
During a meeting with a delegation of youth leaders under the National Opinion Leaders group, Atiku stated that the coalition he’s building with other political heavyweights—including Peter Obi, Aminu Tambuwal, and Nasir El-Rufai—remains strong and committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative.
This comes just days after PDP governors publicly disassociated themselves from Atiku’s opposition coalition, dealing a blow to hopes of a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku, who was PDP’s presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, responded to the snub by reaffirming that “the coalition train has left the station” and remains open to all Nigerians willing to board, regardless of their political affiliation.
In a passionate appeal to young Nigerians, he urged them to ignore short-term enticements and focus on securing a better future. He introduced the coalition’s vision as a “Sabuwar tafiya,” meaning “a new journey” in Hausa—a path towards national renewal.
Meanwhile, the opposition coalition has criticized the PDP governors’ decision, accusing them of playing into the hands of the ruling APC. Salihu Lukman, the coalition’s strategist, claimed the governors are undermining democratic institutions and acting more like spoilers than agents of change.
Lukman added that many PDP leaders have become proxies of the APC, further discrediting the party’s ability to function as a viable opposition force. He singled out Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, for allegedly stalling PDP’s revival and ensuring that Tinubu faces minimal challenge in 2027.
The coalition maintains that their goal is not just to contest elections but to rebuild Nigeria’s democracy from the ground up. Lukman called on all patriotic Nigerians to join the movement, regardless of party lines, for the sake of national survival.
In a related twist, over 20 leaders of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) reaffirmed their loyalty to the APC and President Tinubu. Prominent figures like Senator Umaru Al-Makura, Aminu Masari, and former Education Minister Adamu Adamu dismissed reports suggesting discontent among CPC veterans.
They emphasized that the CPC bloc remains a vital foundation of the APC and warned against attempts to create disunity within the ruling party.
As 2027 draws closer, political tensions are rising, and alliances are shifting. Nigerians now watch eagerly to see if the opposition can unite in time to challenge the dominance of the APC or if internal wrangling will continue to fracture the opposition landscape.
