Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has delivered a scathing criticism of President Bola Tinubu, urging him to declare a state of emergency — not on the nation — but on what he described as his “disastrous presidency.”
Atiku, through a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Ibe, painted a bleak picture of Nigeria’s current state, saying the country is already in a full-blown emergency. According to him, Tinubu’s absence from the country while crises escalate is not only insensitive but also a sign of failed leadership.
“While Nigeria bleeds, Tinubu is enjoying a so-called ‘working visit’ in France — one that looks more like a vacation than anything serious,” Atiku stated. “Since taking office, Tinubu has spent a shocking 59 days in France. This isn’t leadership; it’s an insult to every Nigerian suffering back home.”
He highlighted the worsening security situation in Plateau and Benue States, where killings have continued unabated. “Plateau has become a killing field. Benue is bleeding. Boko Haram is regaining strength. And the people? They’re trapped in poverty, insecurity, and fear,” Atiku lamented.
He slammed the presidency’s justification for the trip, saying even if it’s not a medical trip, the optics are terrible. “Nigerians are not fools. Borrowing billions and jetting off while the nation falls apart is beyond irresponsible — it’s cruel.”
Atiku argued that there’s no task President Tinubu is handling in Paris that couldn’t be done from within Nigeria. “Even if not Lagos, what’s wrong with Iragbiji?” he questioned. “This trip is nothing but a vacation disguised in official wear.”
Calling Tinubu’s leadership style a dereliction of duty, Atiku added that the constitution prioritizes the welfare and security of the people — a duty he believes the president has abandoned.
He concluded with a direct jab: “Nigeria is in a real emergency. Not the kind Tinubu declared in Rivers for political gain. A true leader would return home. The question is — when will Tinubu declare a state of emergency on his own presidency?”
