If you’re still holding onto that old smartphone, it might be time to let go—at least when it comes to using WhatsApp. Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer be supported on several older devices due to new system requirements.
According to Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, this change is part of ongoing updates to keep the app safe and compatible with modern devices. Although the majority of users won’t be affected, those using phones that are over a decade old could lose access.
iPhones That Will Lose WhatsApp Support
The following Apple devices won’t be able to run WhatsApp anymore as they can’t upgrade to iOS 15.1 or above:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
These iPhones, released between 2013 and 2014, are stuck on iOS 12.5.7, which is no longer compatible with WhatsApp’s latest updates.
Android Phones Already Affected Since January 2025
WhatsApp already stopped working on Android devices running KitKat (Android 4.4) and below since January 1, 2025. Most of these phones can no longer be updated by their manufacturers.

How to Check if You’re Safe
You’re good to go if:
Your iPhone runs iOS 15 or later
Your Android device is on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or newer
What To Do If Your Phone Is on the List
1. Back Up Your Chats:
Before switching phones, back up your chats to Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) so you can restore them later.
2. Check for Software Updates:
Head to your phone settings and see if a system update is available. If so, updating could save you from losing WhatsApp access.
3. Consider Upgrading:
If your phone can’t be updated, you may need a new device. The good news is, there are budget-friendly smartphones available that support WhatsApp without draining your wallet.
Is your phone on the list? Don’t wait until it’s too late—check now and stay connected with your loved ones.
