As political tension continues to rise ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is doubling down on his call for a united political front to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Despite opposition from some governors within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku remains confident that a broad coalition remains the only path to rescue Nigeria from what he calls failed leadership.
Speaking through his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku emphasized that the recent rejection of a coalition by the PDP Governors’ Forum is not a setback but a reason for deeper consultations.
“The coalition isn’t just about the PDP; it’s a national movement driven by the people. It will gain momentum with or without initial support from some party leaders,” he stated.
However, not all PDP members are on board. The South-South PDP Youth Amalgamation, led by John Albert Clarkson, has condemned Atiku’s reported alliance with ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. They tagged the move as desperate and self-serving, accusing both men of political inconsistency and opportunism.
“We fully support the PDP Governors’ Forum in rejecting this alliance. It’s a decision grounded in integrity and loyalty to the party’s future,” Clarkson noted.
Meanwhile, in a bold declaration that added a new layer to the evolving 2027 political drama, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said he has the capacity to lead Nigeria. Speaking on Channels TV, Makinde, a second-term governor and key PDP figure, said he would not be pressured into a premature presidential ambition.
“I’m focused on delivering results in Oyo State for now,” he said. “If my political journey ends here, I’m fulfilled. But yes, I have what it takes to lead Nigeria.”
Makinde stressed that the real battle in 2027 won’t be PDP versus APC but Nigerians versus the APC.
Adding to the confusion within the PDP, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, voiced his support for President Tinubu’s re-election during the flag-off of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Uyo. He praised the president’s commitment to infrastructure, calling the 700km highway a transformative project for the South-South.
Elsewhere, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje mocked opposition coalitions and declared the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) dead. He predicted that former NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso would soon return to the APC.
“The NNPP is politically buried. Kwankwaso will come back home,” Ganduje said confidently.
Adding fuel to the political fire, Nasir El-Rufai launched a harsh criticism of Tinubu’s government, calling it the most corrupt and dishonest administration in Nigeria’s history.
Speaking from Katsina, El-Rufai accused the government of spreading lies about security improvements while real bandit leaders remain active in the North.
“This government thrives on propaganda,” he claimed, while also promoting his new political base, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which he believes will emerge victorious in 2027.
As the political landscape heats up, one thing is clear—2027 won’t just be another election year. It will be a battle of ideologies, alliances, and ambitions that could reshape Nigeria’s political future.
