In a heartfelt moment filled with grief and regret, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State publicly apologised to families affected by the recent brutal attacks in Bassa Local Government Area. Over 50 innocent lives were lost in the Zikke community during the early hours of Monday, April 14, when gunmen stormed the area, leaving destruction and sorrow in their wake.
Visibly shaken, Governor Mutfwang visited the devastated community on Tuesday. Standing before the Paramount Ruler of the Miango community and grieving residents, he admitted the failure of government and security agencies to protect lives and property.
“I’ve been crying since yesterday,” the governor confessed, his voice filled with emotion. “I trusted that our security efforts would prevent such tragedies, but like all human arrangements, sometimes they fail. On that night, we failed you. Please, forgive me.”
The attack in Zikke follows another bloodbath that occurred two weeks ago in Bokkos Local Government Area, where many were also killed. These back-to-back tragedies have left Plateau State residents on edge.
While calling for forgiveness, Governor Mutfwang urged community members to continue playing their part in safeguarding their environment by cooperating with security agencies and reporting any suspicious activities.
During the visit, the governor also met with families of the deceased to offer words of comfort and solidarity. Meanwhile, the Paramount Ruler of Irigwe land, Ronku Aka, appealed to the government for more infrastructural support, emphasizing the need for basic social amenities to help restore peace and stability.
