In a major political twist, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has publicly rejected an emerging opposition coalition being championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, stated firmly during their meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, that they would not be part of any alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
This move not only distances the governors from Atiku’s plan but also deepens the existing internal crisis within the PDP. The forum endorsed Deputy National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo as Acting National Secretary, bypassing other contenders and adding fuel to the leadership tussle within the party.
Atiku recently announced the formation of a political alliance aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The coalition reportedly includes influential figures like Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who recently defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) citing the APC’s failure in internal democracy under Tinubu’s leadership.
Meanwhile, Adewale Adebayo, former SDP presidential candidate, confirmed ongoing talks with Atiku and Obi. He emphasized that if these political heavyweights can align with SDP’s values, they stand a solid chance of defeating Tinubu and the ruling APC in the next general elections.
Adding more intrigue to the unfolding political drama, Buba Galadima, a notable chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), alleged that El-Rufai may be serving as Atiku’s backup within the SDP, should the PDP refuse to hand him its presidential ticket.
