A fresh political clash is brewing between the sons of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, centered on their fathers’ aspirations for the 2027 presidential election.
Mohammed Abubakar, son of Atiku Abubakar, accused Governor Bala Mohammed of never genuinely supporting his father’s presidential bids in 2019 and 2023. He claimed that the governor’s personal ambition is fueling internal crises within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
This response came after Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, son of the Bauchi governor, declared that his father would no longer support Atiku’s presidential ambition. Shamsudeen alleged that Atiku sabotaged his father’s 2023 re-election by backing the APC candidate and uniting political elites in Bauchi against them.
“It would be hard to support him again,” Shamsudeen stated. “He didn’t help us in 2023—he actually worked against us. He made no efforts to reconcile or even engage with us. There’s nothing we expect from him except old grudges.”
In a sharp rebuttal, Atiku’s son accused Governor Mohammed of secretly aligning with the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“Atiku never contributed to Bala’s political troubles,” Mohammed Abubakar said. “He operates beyond such petty politics. The issues Bala faced were local and had nothing to do with Atiku.”
He emphasized that Governor Mohammed has never truly supported Atiku, and instead played a divisive role in the 2023 elections.
Backing his claims, Atiku’s son referred to previous remarks by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who alleged that Bala Mohammed undermined Atiku’s presidential campaign behind the scenes.
He also criticized the Bauchi governor’s leadership of the PDP Governors’ Forum, saying his personal ambitions have hindered unity among PDP governors.
He concluded by urging Shamsudeen to embrace mature political dialogue instead of issuing divisive statements.
“Our priority should be constructive dialogue to move Nigeria forward, not pointless accusations,” Mohammed Abubakar advised.
