The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 19 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud in Benin City, Edo State.
According to a statement shared on the agency’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the arrests were made on Saturday, April 12, 2025, by operatives of the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate. The operation was based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to a network of fraudulent online activities.
Although specific details of their alleged schemes have not yet been disclosed, the EFCC revealed that the group was involved in illegal internet operations aimed at defrauding unsuspecting victims.
During the raid, operatives seized several valuable items, including five exotic cars and numerous smartphones.
The EFCC stated, “The suspects were arrested based on credible intelligence that linked them to fraudulent internet activities. Items recovered from them included five exotic cars and smartphones.”
The agency further assured that the suspects will be prosecuted once investigations are completed. “They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the EFCC added.
This operation is part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on internet fraud, popularly known as “yahoo-yahoo,” especially in Edo and other parts of Nigeria.
