Fake Doctor to Face Trial June 3 Over Forged Medical Credentials

ABUJA — The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled June 3, 2025, for the trial of a woman identified as Miriam Emenike Ugochi, who is accused of parading herself as a medical doctor with forged credentials.

According to the Inspector General of Police, Ugochi, 49, is facing a four-count charge for allegedly faking her medical qualifications and presenting herself as a graduate of Imo State University under the name Emerikwe Miriam Kechi. The police claim she used a falsified practising licence, bearing folio number 58357, to deceive authorities and the public.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who is presiding over the case, ordered that a hearing notice be served on the defendant, who is currently being held in prison custody. The court noted her absence, along with that of her legal counsel, during the session scheduled for the continuation of her trial.

The charges state that the accused not only claimed to be a licensed medical doctor but also presented herself as the Chief Medical Director of Mercy & Grace Ministry Hospital. These actions, according to prosecutors, breach Section 1(2) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Prosecuting counsel, Mr. Stanley Nwodo, expressed readiness to proceed with the case and had lined up witnesses for the day’s hearing. “We’ve already taken the first two prosecution witnesses (PW1 and PW2). We were prepared to present the third witness today, but the absence of the defendant stalled proceedings,” he stated.

Mr. Chris Okoye, representing the complainant, noted that the responsibility for producing the defendant in court lies with prison authorities. Meanwhile, Nwodo criticized the Correctional Centre’s failure to present Ugochi, describing it as a recurring issue.

Justice Abdulmalik consequently adjourned the matter to June 3, giving room for proper service and ensuring the defendant’s presence in court.
