A tragic road accident occurred at Iyana Ejigbo in Lagos State, claiming the life of a pedestrian and leaving two others critically injured. The accident involved a painted commercial LT bus with registration number AAA 927 YJ, which reportedly suffered a brake failure while speeding.
According to a statement by the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the driver and conductor of the bus fled the scene immediately after the crash, abandoning both the victims and the vehicle.
“Preliminary investigations show that the driver lost control due to brake failure, causing the bus to veer off and hit unsuspecting pedestrians,” Bakare-Oki stated.
Eyewitnesses and emergency officials reported that the impact was severe, with one of the victims pinned under the vehicle. LASTMA officials acted swiftly to recover the deceased and offer first aid to the injured before all three were transported to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent treatment.
Officers from the Ejigbo Police Division were also present, ensuring security and assisting in the rescue operation. The accidented vehicle has since been handed over to the police for a full investigation.
Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and regularly maintain their vehicles—especially the brake systems—to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
He emphasized that LASTMA remains committed to road safety and quick emergency response and encouraged Lagosians to report accidents or traffic violations using the LASTMA toll-free hotline: 080000527862 (0800-00-LASTMA).
