President Bola Tinubu has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the passing of Christian Chukwu, a revered football legend and former captain of the Green Eagles. Chukwu, aged 74, passed away on Saturday, leaving behind a legacy that has deeply impacted Nigerian sports.
In a heartfelt tribute released by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Chukwu as a towering figure in Nigerian football and a national treasure.
“He was more than a footballer and coach — he was a symbol of excellence and patriotism,” Tinubu said.
Christian Chukwu’s influence on Nigerian football is monumental. He led the Green Eagles to their first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980 as captain and later coached the Super Eagles to a bronze finish in the 2004 edition of the same tournament.
Known fondly as “Chairman” for his leadership and presence on the field, he was a mainstay at Enugu Rangers, where he not only won multiple national titles but also steered the club to continental glory with their 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.
President Tinubu praised Chukwu’s discipline, passion, and unwavering commitment to the country. “He mentored a generation of footballers, brought joy to millions, and stood as a pillar of sportsmanship and national pride,” the statement noted.
