In a statement released on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government described the US Embassy’s claims as misleading and a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s security efforts.
According to the statement, the testimonies of Bishop Wilfred Anagbe and Rev. Fr. Remigius Ihyula during the U.S. hearing were seen as a simplification of a highly complex national issue. “While we respect their freedom of expression, their remarks do not fully capture the reality on the ground,” the ministry noted.
The Nigerian government emphasized that the assertion that it has allowed violence to go unchecked is not only “inaccurate” but also “unfair.”
It highlighted the various steps being taken to address security issues, including deploying forces to hotspots, promoting peace among farmers and herders, strengthening intelligence operations, and initiating land reform and economic development programs.
“Although challenges remain, Nigeria has not been idle or indifferent,” the statement added. “We are tackling multiple security threats—terrorism, banditry, and organized crime—which affect Nigerians of all faiths and regions.”
The government also reaffirmed its dedication to upholding fundamental human rights, especially freedom of religion and speech. It assured the public that any threats or intimidation directed at religious leaders would be thoroughly investigated and addressed appropriately.
The Ministry also rejected the idea that Nigeria’s crisis should be framed as an “Islamist extermination” of Christians. “We remain committed to safeguarding every Nigerian, regardless of faith or ethnicity, while working with both local and international partners to overcome our security challenges.”
Finally, the government called on the media and international observers to engage in responsible reporting that reflects the complexity of Nigeria’s security situation. “We urge for dialogue, not division,” the statement concluded.
