In a significant victory for Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted a large consignment of illicit drugs worth a staggering N18 million.
This operation, carried out at the Mfum Border in Cross River State, showcases the effectiveness of vigilance and inter-agency collaboration in tackling the growing drug trade in the region.
The seizure was made by the joint efforts of the NCS’s Cross River/Calabar Free Trade Zone and Akwa Ibom Area Command, which led to the discovery of 659 units of controlled pharmaceutical substances.
These substances included dangerous drugs such as 216 units of Pethidine 100mg, 216 units of Morphine Sulphate, and 108 units of Fentanyl 50mm, along with several other high-risk substances including Phenobarbital, Sodium Sterop, Midazolam Mylan, and Sodium Injectables.
Speaking at the official handover of the seized drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Calabar, Area Comptroller Gabriel Ogbonna praised the officers for their dedication and vigilance.
He stressed that this operation is not just an achievement but a learning opportunity for younger officers, showcasing the critical importance of inter-agency cooperation. Ogbonna further emphasized the success of this operation as a testament to the growing synergy between the NCS and NDLEA, both working toward the common goal of ensuring national security and public safety.
The NDLEA Commander for Cross River State, Rachael Umebuali, expressed her gratitude towards the Customs officers for their support and cooperation. She highlighted that the partnership between the NCS and NDLEA enhances their operational efficiency, ensuring a more impactful fight against drug trafficking.
“This operation is a vital example of how collaboration between agencies leads to more significant victories against crime,” Umebuali said. She also acknowledged the critical role these joint efforts play in safeguarding the health and well-being of Nigerians.
As the investigation continues, authorities are focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible for the smuggling operation.
