Police Caution Protesters Over Clash With National Police Day
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has advised the “Take It Back Movement” to suspend their planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025, warning that the timing is inappropriate and potentially provocative.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police expressed concern over the protest’s alignment with National Police Day, a newly established day to honor the efforts and resilience of Nigerian police officers.
Protest Timing Seen as a Provocation
According to the NPF, the protest — expected to take place in various states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) — raises questions about its intent, given that the Federal Government has officially designated April 7 as a day to celebrate the police force.
The day is set to include high-profile events with local and international dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats. The NPF believes the protest might be perceived as an attempt to disrupt and discredit the national celebration.
Respect for Rights, But a Call for Dialogue
While the police acknowledged the right of citizens to peaceful protest under the constitution, they urged caution and responsibility. “Staging a protest on a day meant to celebrate the police appears calculated to malign the institution and its efforts,” the statement noted.
Police Call for Engagement, Not Disruption
The NPF called on the organizers of the protest to consider engaging with relevant government institutions to address their grievances through peaceful dialogue rather than staging disruptive demonstrations.
Reaffirming its dedication to law and order, the police emphasized their readiness to protect rights while maintaining public peace and national image.
