Bayelsa NCoS Clears the Air on Detention Allegations
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Bayelsa State Command, has officially denied reports alleging the illegal detention of 15 domestic workers belonging to former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.
A statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC I G.T. Isari, described the circulating claims as baseless and aimed at misleading the public and tarnishing the image of the Service.
Inmates Are Legally Remanded and Undergoing Trial
Contrary to social media reports suggesting the workers were held without trial since 2019, the NCoS clarified that all 15 individuals were remanded by High Court 1 in Bayelsa and have consistently appeared in court as required.
They were present at trial sessions on March 10 and 11, 2025, and most recently on April 3, 2025. The next hearing is scheduled for April 17, 2025.
Fair Treatment and Due Process Confirmed
“The inmates have been treated fairly and in line with human rights standards,” Isari affirmed. “No one is admitted into any custodial centre in Nigeria without a valid court-issued remand warrant. These individuals were remanded legally, and due process has been followed.”
No Secret Meeting With Patience Jonathan
The NCoS also dismissed rumors of a secret meeting between Dame Patience Jonathan and senior correctional officials. It emphasized that such claims are fabricated and aimed at creating tension where there is none.
Correctional Centre in Okaka Remains Peaceful
Reiterating the facility’s reputation, the Service stated that the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Okaka is one of the most orderly in the country. It called on the public to disregard the misinformation making rounds online.
Leadership Committed to Justice and Reformation
The Command assured Nigerians that under the leadership of Acting Controller General Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, it remains dedicated to the safe and lawful custody of inmates and their reformation and reintegration into society.
