Anambra, Nigeria – April 6, 2025 – Tension and confusion rocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Awka on Saturday as the much-anticipated election failed to kick off even after several hours.
The delay, coupled with alleged irregularities, forced three aspirants to pull out of the race.
Sir Paul Chukwuma, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, and Chief Chukwuma Umeoji all announced their withdrawal, citing concerns ranging from lack of transparency to safety fears.
Chukwuma went a step further by resigning his APC membership entirely, accusing the party of being infiltrated by what he described as “unprogressive elements.”
Supporters of the aspirants complained bitterly about the chaotic nature of the process. Delegates were seen hanging around several hotels across Awka, uncertain about the next steps, while accreditation was reportedly taking place in secret locations, far from the official venue—the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre.
As at 6:30 p.m., the primary, scheduled to begin by 9 a.m., had yet to start, leaving many stranded and frustrated. The atmosphere worsened when violence erupted earlier in the day.
Thugs allegedly hired by one of the aspirants attacked and injured delegates in a bid to hijack the process. Even with security personnel on ground, the situation escalated, causing panic and discontent.
Professor Okonkwo, in his official letter of withdrawal, expressed regret over his decision but insisted it was necessary to safeguard the lives of his loyal supporters.
“This project is not worth the blood of my people,” he stated. “Some developments within the party do not align with my values.”
As it stands, four candidates remain in the race: Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, and Hon. Edozie Madu—all hailing from the Anambra South Senatorial Zone, just like the incumbent governor, Prof. Charles Soludo.
With no official statement yet from the party leadership, many are now questioning the credibility of the entire process and what this chaos could mean for APC’s chances in the coming elections.
