Trump Extends TikTok Deadline by 75 Days, Says Deal Still in Progress

Trump Grants TikTok More Time Amid US-China Tensions

Just as TikTok’s April 5 ban deadline approached, President Donald Trump has granted the Chinese-owned app an extra 75 days, giving room for a deal to be finalized.

The announcement came on Truth Social, Trump’s personal platform, where he revealed that his administration is actively working to strike a deal that could prevent the popular app from being shut down in the United States.

“My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress,” Trump wrote.

He stated that the extra time is needed to complete necessary approvals, and a new Executive Order has been signed to extend negotiations.

What’s at Stake for TikTok?

The pressure on ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has been mounting since a bipartisan bill passed in 2024 demanding that the app sever ties with Chinese ownership due to national security concerns.

The extension means TikTok can continue to operate in the US while talks continue. The original ban was postponed earlier this year, and the latest move delays it again beyond the April 5 deadline.

Trump added that his tough stance on China remains, linking the TikTok issue with his broader economic strategy.

“We hope to continue working in good faith with China… but tariffs remain the most powerful tool for protecting our national security,” he said.

Looking Forward: A Deal on the Horizon?

President Trump emphasized that the US does not want TikTok to “go dark,” expressing hope that a resolution is near.

“We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the deal,” he concluded.

The future of TikTok in the United States now rests on the outcome of these next 75 days of negotiations—a window that could determine whether the platform remains accessible to millions of American users.
