An Israeli airstrike in the Lebanese port city of Sidon on Friday killed a Hamas commander, Hassan Farhat, along with his adult son and daughter.
The strike, which targeted a residential apartment, also caused significant damage to the building and surrounding area, sparking panic among residents.
The Israeli military claimed that Farhat, who was the commander of Hamas’s western operations in Lebanon, was responsible for multiple attacks on Israeli forces, including a deadly rocket attack on the town of Safed in February 2024.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the attack, calling it a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and a breach of the ceasefire agreement with Israel established in November 2023.
The strike has heightened tensions in a region already on edge due to ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
This targeted killing follows recent Israeli airstrikes in Beirut, including one earlier this week that killed a Hezbollah official, further escalating the already volatile situation in the region.
The Lebanese government has called for international pressure on Israel to halt its attacks, particularly those affecting civilian areas.
The ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel has not held, with both sides continuing military operations despite the truce.
