In a landmark ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court removed Julius Abure from his position as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
The decision, made by a five-member panel, overturned the Court of Appeal’s earlier judgment, which had affirmed Abure’s leadership role.
The apex court clarified that the Court of Appeal had overstepped its jurisdiction by ruling on a matter that pertains to the internal leadership structure of the Labour Party. According to the court, such issues are strictly within the domain of the party and not subject to judicial review.
The ruling also noted that the appeal brought by Senator Esther Usman and another party member was valid, as it was deemed meritorious.
Furthermore, the court observed that Abure’s tenure had already expired, which led to the dismissal of the cross-appeal filed by his faction within the Labour Party.
As the matter is settled, the Labour Party is set to make significant internal adjustments.
