In a strong show of commitment to the fight against crime, troops of the Nigerian Army under the 81 Division, Kofo Abayomi, Lagos, successfully intercepted a major shipment of illicit drugs in Ogun State.
The operation, which took place on April 2, 2025, led to the seizure of 320 wraps of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.
According to military reports, the arrest was made during a routine patrol in the Alamutu general area of Odeda Local Government Area, a known route often exploited by smugglers.
The suspected traffickers, who were conveying the drugs on two motorcycles, quickly abandoned their cargo and fled into a nearby forest when they noticed the approaching troops.
Speaking on the operation, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, emphasized that the mission was in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s vision to support other security agencies in tackling criminal activities, including drug trafficking, across Nigeria.
“This is part of the Division’s ongoing efforts to sanitize its Area of Responsibility from the grip of drug syndicates and ensure a safe environment for citizens,” Lt. Col. Ayeni said.
Following the successful interception, the recovered drugs were handed over to the Military Police of the 35 Artillery Brigade.
From there, the case will be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun State for a full investigation and possible prosecution of those involved.
Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, praised the troops for their vigilance and quick response. He also urged them to continue intensifying their operations to track down criminal elements threatening public safety.
In a stern warning to would-be offenders, the GOC stated, “Anyone engaging in illegal activities such as drug smuggling should rethink their actions.
The Nigerian Army will not tolerate criminality in any form. Offenders will be apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
The Army also reassured residents in the area of their commitment to protecting lives and property, while encouraging the public to cooperate with security operatives by providing credible information about suspicious movements or activities in their communities.
This latest operation highlights the growing collaboration between military forces and law enforcement agencies to tackle drug-related crimes, which continue to pose serious risks to public health and national security.
