A heartbreaking incident unfolded off the Greek island of Lesbos as an inflatable boat carrying migrants capsized, leading to the loss of seven lives, including two children. Greek authorities confirmed the tragic event, stating that 23 individuals were successfully rescued.
Initially, four bodies were discovered in the Aegean Sea, but further search efforts led to the recovery of three more victims. The boat, which carried around 30 people, sank despite mild weather conditions, just a short distance from Turkey’s coastline.
“Their vessel started taking on water and sank rapidly,” a coast guard spokeswoman reported, emphasizing that search operations were ongoing to locate any remaining survivors.
Among the deceased were four women, a boy, and a girl. Authorities have yet to disclose details about the remaining victims or their nationalities.
The Dangerous Journey to Europe
Greece, positioned at the southeastern edge of Europe, has long been a major entry point for migrants from Asia and the Middle East seeking a better life in Western Europe. However, the journey is perilous, with thousands of lives lost at sea.
According to the United Nations, nearly 2,500 migrants perished attempting to cross into Europe last year alone. Since the beginning of this year, approximately 9,000 people have entered Greece, primarily by sea, with over 54,000 recorded arrivals in 2024.
Tighter Migration Policies
Greece’s conservative government has taken a firmer stance on migration. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently reinforced this position, stating in parliament, “If you enter Greece illegally and do not qualify for asylum, we will do everything possible to send you back.”
He also criticized human smuggling networks and certain NGOs, declaring, “Smugglers and those who aid them will not dictate who enters our country.”
This latest tragedy underscores the ongoing dangers of migrant crossings and the broader challenges of migration policies in the region.
