The Conference of State Legislatures of Nigeria (CSSLN) has strongly condemned the brutal lynching of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, on March 28, 2025.
These innocent victims, falsely accused of carrying firearms, were killed by a mob in a horrifying act of jungle justice.
In a statement released yesterday, Adebo Ogundoyin, chairman of the conference and speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, described the incident as “barbaric and indefensible.” He called for immediate action against those responsible for the killings.
A Call for Justice and Oversight
The legislators expressed deep concern over the growing trend of extrajudicial killings in the country.
“Mob justice is a serious threat to peace and security. It undermines the rule of law and violates fundamental human rights,” Ogundoyin stated.
The conference commended the Edo State government and security agencies for their swift intervention but urged them to intensify efforts in arresting and prosecuting the perpetrators.
Additionally, CSSLN stressed the need for better oversight of local vigilante groups to prevent further abuses.
“Community policing should be a tool for protection, not oppression. Vigilante groups must operate with professionalism and respect for human rights,” the statement added.
Condolences to the Bereaved Families
The legislators extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims, expressing solidarity in their time of grief.
As investigations continue, Nigerians are calling for justice, hoping this tragic incident serves as a wake-up call against lawlessness and mob violence.
