A fatal accident occurred over the weekend on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos, when a deaf pedestrian was crushed by a mini commercial bus, commonly known as Korope.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the driver of the mini bus, allegedly driving recklessly, lost control of the vehicle, veered off his lane, and crashed into another stationary mini bus before hitting the unsuspecting pedestrian.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident through its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.
He stated that the accident involved two Suzuki mini buses with registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG.
“In line with the United Nations Response Time (UNRT) protocol, LASTMA officials swiftly arrived at the scene, secured the area, and contacted law enforcement officers from the Area ‘F’ Police Division, who took custody of both vehicles for further investigation,” Taofiq said.
Additionally, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) was alerted by LASTMA officials and promptly transported the victim’s remains to the General Hospital in Ikeja.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged commercial bus operators to adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
He highlighted the role of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) speed limit sites at locations such as Alapere, Ogudu Road, and NITEL on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, emphasizing their importance in monitoring speed violations and improving road safety.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Indiscriminate speeding and blatant disregard for traffic rules pose significant risks to public safety.
I urge all motorists to adhere to legal speed limits to prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” Giwa stated.
The Lagos State Government continues to implement measures to enhance road safety, urging drivers and pedestrians alike to remain vigilant and comply with traffic laws to avoid similar incidents in the future.
