Bayern Munich is furious with Canada Soccer after their star defender, Alphonso Davies, returned from international duty with a serious knee injury.
The German club is now considering legal action, accusing Canada Soccer of gross negligence in handling the player’s condition.
What Happened?
Davies, who also captains the Canadian national team, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a CONCACAF Nations League third-place playoff against the United States.
He was forced off the pitch just 12 minutes into the match, which Canada won 2-1.
Initially, Canada Soccer gave Davies the all-clear, allowing him to travel back to Munich. However, upon his arrival, medical tests revealed the severity of the injury, ruling him out for at least six months.
Bayern’s Strong Reaction
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen did not hold back, calling the handling of Davies’ injury irresponsible.
“Sending an obviously injured player on a 12-hour intercontinental flight without a proper medical assessment is gross negligence,” Dreesen said. “We reserve the right to take legal action.”
Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, also voiced his frustration, saying Canada Soccer’s decision was “borderline and negligent.”
“We pay the players’ salaries, and this kind of decision-making is unacceptable. We will investigate the matter thoroughly.”
Bayern Facing Injury Crisis
Davies’ injury is a major blow for Bayern, who are already dealing with key absences, including captain Manuel Neuer and defender Dayot Upamecano.
With the club fighting for the Bundesliga title and preparing for a crucial Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan, losing Davies is a massive setback.

With legal threats in the air, Canada Soccer may have to defend its handling of the situation. Meanwhile, Bayern will have to adjust to life without their star left-back, hoping he can recover in time for the 2026 World Cup, which Canada will co-host.
