The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to educational equity, particularly in ensuring that Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates can now participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
This milestone, according to NAPS, reflects the government’s dedication to fairness, inclusivity, and the overall enhancement of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
A Win for Advocacy and Resilience
Speaking on the achievement, NAPS National President, Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan, expressed deep appreciation for the role played by the Minister of Education, Dr. Mamud Olatunji Alausa, in making this long-awaited reform a reality.
He described the move as a victory for polytechnic students nationwide, emphasizing that the students’ body, alongside past and present leaders, had consistently pushed for the implementation of this policy.
“We engaged with key institutions, including the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and other relevant agencies, to advocate for this change.
Today, we celebrate the power of resilience, strategic engagement, and unwavering commitment to students’ welfare,” he stated.
Call for Compliance with NYSC Guidelines
NAPS urged all students to adhere strictly to the NYSC mobilisation guidelines, stressing that compliance is essential for smooth registration and participation.
“As we celebrate this success, we encourage all full-time HND graduates to take advantage of this opportunity and proceed with their mobilisation without delay.
However, students must ensure they meet all eligibility requirements, as the association will not be responsible for any challenges arising from non-compliance,” he added.
This development is seen as a major breakthrough in addressing the long-standing disparity between HND and university graduates, further strengthening the push for equal recognition of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
