Former President Goodluck Jonathan Speaks Out Amid Rivers Political Turmoil
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed deep concern over the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials, warning that such actions damage Nigeria’s global reputation.
Jonathan made these remarks while speaking as the Chairman at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday.
He criticized the growing trend of political instability, stating that the removal of elected officials sends a negative signal about Nigeria’s democratic process.
NNPP Supports Tinubu’s Emergency Declaration
Meanwhile, on the same day, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) threw its support behind President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers.
According to NNPP National Chairman Dr. Agbo Major, the move was necessary to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
“President Tinubu, as Nigeria’s Chief Security Officer, has access to intelligence reports that the public may not be aware of. Given the deepening crisis, taking decisive action was imperative to maintain order,” Dr. Major told journalists.
He further criticized some leaders for allowing the situation to spiral out of control before stepping in to comment on it.
Jonathan: Judiciary Must Remain Independent
Former President Jonathan also raised concerns about the growing influence of political figures over the judiciary, warning that it erodes public confidence in the legal system.
“When an individual can dictate to the judiciary, it becomes difficult for people to trust the system.
The credibility of Nigeria’s executive, legislature, and judiciary directly impacts the nation’s global image and its ability to attract investment,” Jonathan stated.
Despite his usual reluctance to comment on political issues, Jonathan said he felt compelled to speak out due to mounting pressure from Nigerians urging him to address the unfolding crisis.
