Tragedy struck at Mayigi Community Comprehensive High School, Ilase, in Ogun State’s Ipokia Local Government Area, as a violent rainstorm destroyed classrooms, leading to the death of a 14-year-old JSS3 student, Timothy Amosun.
The disaster also left several others injured, including five students, two teachers, a food vendor, and her seven-month-old child.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Abeokuta, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed the incident.
Governor Abiodun expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as shocking and heartbreaking.
He assured the affected families that the government would cover the medical expenses of the injured victims.
He further directed relevant agencies to transfer critically injured individuals to specialist hospitals within and outside the state for proper treatment.
“The Ogun State government will take full responsibility for the victims’ medical bills and ensure they receive the best possible care.
We pray for the family of the deceased and hope they find the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement read.
Additionally, the Commissioner for Education, Abayomi Arigbabu, has been assigned to visit the school and the victims’ families to assess the damage and determine necessary reconstruction efforts.
