The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the urgent need to restore order in the politically troubled region.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Matawalle emphasized that the drastic measure was essential to prevent further political instability.

He pointed to the destruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly as a major trigger for the crisis, stating that the state has been left without a functioning legislature for over 14 months.

According to him, this has hindered effective governance and denied the people of Rivers State the benefits of democracy.

The minister also referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the need for a working legislature, condemning the actions of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as unconstitutional.

Matawalle further warned about increasing threats from militant groups and acts of vandalism in the state, stressing that security forces were on high alert to protect government assets and public order.

“The Nigerian Military is fully prepared to safeguard infrastructure and ensure the safety of citizens,” Matawalle stated.

“Any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public peace will be met with a decisive response.”

He called on all stakeholders to use this period to rebuild governance structures in the state, expressing hope that the emergency rule would bring long-term peace and stability to Rivers State.
